Crafted to Precision: The 5-Step Sanding Ritual That Transforms Good Length Bats

Marshal Lakhanpuria

At Good Length, every cricket bat is a product of precision, patience, and purpose. Our unique five-step sanding process blends machine accuracy with hand-crafted finesse, resulting in a bat that’s not only visually refined but structurally balanced and performance-ready.

The Process That Sets Us Apart

After shaping the bat to its final profile, we begin a meticulous sanding journey using five different sandpaper grits—progressing from coarse to ultra-fine, up to 5000 grit. Each bat undergoes 1.5 to 2 hours of finishing, ensuring no detail is overlooked.

Step 1: Initial Shaping (Grit 100–120) We begin with a sanding machine to remove rough edges and establish the blade’s contours. This step ensures consistency and sets the foundation for refinement.

Step 2: Surface Refinement (Grit 400) Hand-sanding begins here, smoothing the surface while preserving the bat’s profile and weight distribution.

Step 3: Grain Enhancement (Grit 800) This step reveals the natural grain of the willow, done entirely by hand to maintain control and sensitivity.

Step 4: Satin Polish (Grit 3000) We reintroduce the orbital sanding machine for a uniform, satin-smooth finish that enhances both aesthetics and feel.

Step 5: Final Buff (Grit 5000) The final touch is hand-sanded to achieve a mirror-like finish that elevates the bat’s visual appeal and tactile quality.

Strength, Balance, and Beauty

This hybrid approach—machine for structure, hand for finesse—creates a bat that is:

  • Visually refined with a satin sheen and exceptional finish;

  • Hand-sanding allows for micro-adjustments across the blade, helping the willow settle evenly and improving the bat’s overall balance;
  • Structurally balanced for improved pickup and swing;

  • Stronger and more durable due to even willow compression;

  • Brings out the natural grain of the willow, allowing players to assess quality and responsiveness more clearly.

Why It Matters

Most bats are sanded quickly, often relying entirely on machines. Ours are crafted with intention. Every grit, every stroke, every hour spent is part of a philosophy: performance through precision, beauty through balance.

A Good Length bat isn’t just made—it’s mastered excellence.
